Our dear Annie is now buried in our yard alongside our beloved Agatha and Walker. In mid December, she went from being a very alert, nimble bloodhound to exhibiting never-before-observed signs of confusion. Two weeks ago, her symptoms multiplied and worsened—
Trouble seeing, especially out of her left eye
Deafness
Escalation of confusion
Stumbling in and outside the house
Running into previously familiar objects
Falling off our deck
Incessantly turning tight clockwise circles to her right
until she was exhausted
Difficulty eating and drinking
Unintentional fall into our rain-filled pond and could not get out
and perhaps the most alarming symptom for a bloodhound—
Ability to smell—GONE!
No more wagging tail
Absence of joy
Worried expression on her face
No more games with, Emma, our 18-lb. terrier (her best friend)
This morning we took her to see our veterinarian who gave her a thorough examination and believed all of her issues to be intracranial. She was about 11 years old; but since we adopted her from Woods Humane Society, we’ll never know her actual birthdate.
We made the difficult decision to have her euthanized and are beyond exhausted and emotionally drained. We have not slept in many nights because Annie had to be let outside throughout the night.
Now she’s resting peacefully.
Oh, Leslie & Jon, we are so very sorry to hear of the loss of your 4 legged family member!! Shed a few tears knowing what you’re going through without her, as we were when we had to put down Levi 4 years ago. The joy this wonderful friend brings has been such a blessing & challenge that we’re entrusted with. RIP Annie, you’ve deserved a special place in your family’s hearts & they’ll never forget you. Praying for you!! Matthew 5:4
Lovingly, Gary & Freddie
Thank you so much, Gary and Freddie. We know you understand the lingering heartache that comes with losing a cherished dog.
So sorry friend ❣️Our fur babies bring us so much love and joy. I had to take our 14 year, 7 month old, 10 lb. Papillion / Chihuahua to the vet on Friday because of similar symptoms. We are trying a couple of medications for now, but it is hard seeing him struggle.
Praying for comfort for both of you always.
Thank you, Vicki, for sending your message. So sorry your dog is ailing. Perhaps the meds will prove helpful.❤️
Oh Leslie! I am so terribly sorry to hear of the loss of Annie. What a hard day indeed! I pray you will find comfort in the special memories you made with her and in the knowledge that you gave her a wonderful home and life. She was lucky to have a human like you! Don’t know fully what the new heavens and new earth will be like, but I love the image the Bible paints of a peaceable kingdom with animals as well as people represented!
Thank you, Marilyn, for your consoling words. We miss her now and will continue to hold her memory in our hearts❣️
As you know, our Pepper is struggling too. Vet says it’s heart
issues and she gets meds twice a day which makes her very
lethargic. Not sure how much longer we’ll have her with us.
This is my 1st dog ever so it will be hard. We (you and us) don’t
need one more thing to deal with. But God is good and I have
to believe that.
Yes, Bonnie, God is good, and we believe that, too!
Sorry to read about your loss, always sad to lose a fur baby. Sending hugs and love
Thank you, Nancy❣️
Oh, dear Leslie and Jon. What a draining time, indeed, and yes, you will need time to regain your calm. May St. Francis be close to you and Emma. The other comments have said so much, so movingly, a true record of the love and partnership with our dogs and pets. Did not realize her time was so close. We will all miss her. Love, Genevieve and Dolfi
Thank you, Genevieve. We, along with you, did not realize Annie’s time was so close. Her health deteriorated very quickly. 🙁
Oh dear Leslie, I’m so sorry to hear this. What dear friends our sweet pets become, and I know you and Jon will miss her terribly. Prayers for both of you. ❤️
Thank you so much, Marjy❣️
Oh Leslie and John. As you know I always felt a special connection to gentle Annie. I’m so sorry to hear that the last few weeks have been so difficult for all of you and I’m grateful you and she are now able to rest peacefully.
My son’s little face crumpled in deep sorrow as I shared the news with him. Annie will be very much missed.
Giselle, thank you for your kind words. Annie’s memory will always live on in our hearts and minds. ❤️
I’m so very sorry your Annie is gone and that she had to go through this last bit at the end. So did our Pierre. It’s so hard at the end. Hugs and prayers to you and Jon. ♥️
Thank you, Linda❣️
This was hard to read, though not a complete surprise with what you’ve told me about Annie’s declining health. Your plate overfloweth and not in the way you prefer. This is never easy but knowing you gave a sweet dog a wonderful life on earth that she couldn’t have had with anybody but you and Jon = priceless. Love you much and praying for you (and Emma too). Animals grieve and she will miss her BDF (best dog friend).
Thank you so much, Julie. Yes, Emma is definitely missing her BDF. 🙁
I’m so so sorry. I can see her looking out the window of your car… such a love
From the time we first met Annie in June 2010, she always loved looking out windows!
Oh no! I’m so sorry Leslie. Annie will be missed. So sad. I hope you, John and Emma are hanging in there!
Thank you so much, Teresa. We are hanging in there . . . by the grace of God. Emma is especially sad this morning. 🙁
I’m so sorry. Pets are a part of our family.
Thanks so much, Bonnie. ❤️
