‘Til the Storm Passes By

‘Til the Storm Passes By

by Mosie Lister

1)  In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face,
While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place.
‘Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry,
“Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.”

Chorus
‘Til the storm passes over, ’til the thunder sounds no more,
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.

2)  Many times Satan whispered, “There is no use to try,
For there’s no end of sorrow, there’s no hope by and by.”
But I know Thou art with me, and tomorrow I’ll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies.

Chorus
‘Til the storm passes over, ’til the thunder sounds no more,
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.

3)  When the long night has ended and the storms come no more,
Let me stand in Thy presence on that bright, peaceful shore.
In that land where the tempest never comes, Lord, may I
Dwell with Thee when the storm passes by.

Chorus
‘Til the storm passes over, ’til the thunder sounds no more,
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.

This hymn isn’t one I was familiar with as a youth. Probably ten years ago, I discovered it while playing through one of my hymnals on the piano. It has become one of my favorites and I hope it’s an encouragement to you, too. We all have storms in our lives—perhaps generated by the weather like the one that just hit Louisiana again—sometimes financial, sometimes relational, sometimes our health. It is good to know we have a God Who cares and will ride out the storm with us and not abandon us through it all.

  1. wow – that is truly a beautiful hymn, and it reminds us that even when our lives look so bleak, we will one day stand in his presence, and all of life’s problems and suffering will remain in the distant past. He will wipe every tear from our eyes; there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things will have passed away. Thank you for this reminder, my sister!

  2. Once again, Leslie, you have moved me immensely with your words, your heart, and your incredible love for the Lord. This is truly a most powerful song- so timely and so true.

Yours is a storm, Les. May you feel the contour of His hand, His loving touch, and His mighty strength as you are held so preciously in the hollow of His hand.

    1. Katie ~ Thank you, once again, for your encouraging reminders of our Father’s presence with me throughout this ongoing storm. Can’t track this kind of a storm with radar or sophisticated equipment, so the most reassuring thing is to be held by His steady hand.

  3. thanks for sharing that hymn…it’s beautiful and true…

  4. Leslie, this is one of my favorite songs that the Gaither group sings.
I left the words you gave us on the computer and played the song and was able to sing along and cry and pray and rejoice for the day we are with Him forever. Thank you. Love to all of you.
