Through it all . . .

Through It All

(written by Andraé Crouch)
(recorded by Andraé Crouch & The Disciples)

I’ve had many tears and sorrows
I’ve had questions for tomorrow
There’ve been times I didn’t know right from wrong
But in every situation
God gave me blessed consolation
That my trials only come to make me strong

Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to trust in Jesus
I’ve learned to trust in God
Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to depend upon His Word

I’ve been to lots of places
You know I’ve seen a lot of faces
There’s been times I felt so all alone
But in my lonely hours
Yes, those precious lonely hours
Jesus lets me know I am His own

Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to trust in Jesus
I’ve learned to trust in God
Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to depend upon His Word

So I thank God for the mountains
And I thank Him for the valleys
I thank Him for the storms He’s brought me through
For if I’d never had a problem
I wouldn’t know that He could solve them
I’d never know what faith in His Word could do

Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to trust in Jesus
I’ve learned to trust in God
Through it all
through it all
I’ve learned to depend upon His Word

Shortly after arriving in Lomalinda, Colombia, I was asked to sing Through It All at a memorial service with two other short-term assistants, Sandy and Sally. A young married woman who had been working with Wycliffe Bible Translators died at a Bogotá hospital. If my memory serves me correctly, she had an inoperable brain tumor. Her body had been brought back to Lomalinda for burial. It was a very sad time. Even though I’d never met her, it was difficult to sing through my tears. That was the first time I’d ever heard Through It All.

During these days of unprecedented global uncertainty, I’ve been reflecting on God’s past faithfulness in close calls with death and walking through difficult times with family and friends. Across good times and bad, God has been near. It takes the worry out of tomorrow knowing He isn’t taking an extended vacation, suddenly been afflicted with deafness, switched His iPhone to “Do Not Disturb” mode, nor become unavailable due to a government mandate to self-isolate. As I recently shared with a friend—

Our God is not One to be doubted.
Fail” isn’t in His vocabulary!
We can never go wrong by trusting Him fully.

On January 8, 2015, Crouch died at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. He was 72. On the same day, his sister, Sandra, released the following statement: “Today my twin brother, womb-mate and best friend went home to be with the Lord. Please keep me, my family and our church family in your prayers. I tried to keep him here but God loved him best.”

Following Crouch’s death, Christian recording artist Michael W. Smith told Billboard Magazine, “…I’ll never forget hearing Andraé for the first time. It was like someone had opened a whole new world of possibilities for me musically. I don’t think there is anyone who inspired me more, growing up, than Andraé Crouch. The depth of his influence on Christian music is incalculable. We all owe him so much and I’ll forever be grateful for the times we got to work together.”

  1. Thank you, Leslie. You nailed it. It’s amazing how you can listen to music, sing the words, and yet when you are going through something as personal and as powerful as your battle with ALS, or our current enemy Covid, these words take on a whole new understanding and purpose.

    1. Katie ~ If, as you suggest, I “nailed it,” then you drove it in a little deeper with your mallet. During these trying times when our faith is being tested unlike any other time in any of our lives. Reminded just now of the Apostle Paul’s words recorded in Ephesians 6:13 (emphasis mine)—”Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

  2. Leslie’s Friends and Family,

Through it All, Through it All is the song I will meditate on today. So Thank You Leslie.

Sorry I’ve been so off the grid. Lost my grip for a minute due to overwhelming pain and isolation long before COVID.

Mom’s cancer requires quality of life decisions. I get to be at her side, I get to be there for my dad and siblings who are pre grieving…. I get to be The People Our Father who chose to be a living temple for those who don’t have that relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope I said that right.

The card I drew today: Ps 146:5 – Blessed are those whose hope is in the Lord their God.

Love and Miss You…. Love, Miss Missy

    1. Missy ~ Thank you for sharing where you’re at. I have walked where your feet are treading and understand how difficult and stressful your life is right now. Try to remember that today has enough going on. You can’t predict what tomorrow will hold, but you do know the One Who has already walked through tomorrow and will be your Guide and Help!

  3. Leslie, not only do you depend on His Word, you live it and share it. The uncertainties challenging society during the Covid-19 are familiar to you, and yes, through it all, you maintain profound trust. I have the impression that many of God’s children are returning to His Word and learning its inestimable worth. Thinking of you and Jon often. Love, Genevieve and Dolfi

    1. Genevieve and Dolfi ~ Trust you are doing well during this extended period of self-isolation at home. It is helpful to remember that COVID-19 hasn’t surprised God. Since He knows and is familiar with the end of all things from the very beginning, He knew this was coming. That’s why we can be confident leaning into Him as we face such difficult times. He has us in His firm grip!

  4. There are no options…I’ve got to trust Jesus.
So sorry you didn’t make it to the ALS Zoom. I
    really missed seeing you.
